Our Story

Tenchido-Shobenjukai is a martial arts academy that is based in Maryland but offers remote training. Founded in 2007 by Sensei Martin Jenkins, this dojo teaches and trains willing students various means of self defense and traditional ways of karate. Students at Tenchido-Shobenjukai Martial Arts Academy are immersed in the traditional and universal aspects of martial arts. The personal development of students is prioritized, with focuses on physical, emotional, mental, social, and spiritual development.

At Tenchido-Shobenjukai Martial Arts Academy, we develop and promote strong warriors within our own ranks, teaching them the traditions of Goshi-Shun, bushido (the way of the warrior), and samurai training.

The Meaning of Tenchido-Shobenjukai


SHOBENJUKAI is the Bushido-style training of a warrior. It is the total preparation for combating enemies, known and unknown. It is the knowledge and practice of self-preservation. Above all, it is the training necessary to learn and utilize Ki to exercise one’s inherent right to defend oneself.
